Volkskunst-Hafencity is a hobby website by two private Hamburg individuals (Alan and Inken) with an interest in the HafenCity and who are impressed by the strength of grass-roots expression of ordinary people.
The website is the visible expression of our own feelings, excitement and hopes for a bright future. We want the HafenCity to become an increasingly vibrant place, full of life and engendering positive feelings. We wish to encourage and support grass-roots cultural activity in the HafenCity and provide a platform for the promotion of arts and struggling artists on the internet.
In short, we hope that the city of Hamburg doesn't simply expand, but provides something new and fresh for the people of Hamburg to enjoy and be proud of for generations to come.
Our original inspiration was the ViewPoint action which we describe under "projects". We were impressed by the creative expression of ordinary people and observed some of the arts actions underway in the HafenCity ("Kunst und Kultur in der HafenCity 2005") - like the BRT, Südwärts, etc. We also stumbled over the Bauzaunkunst and saw this as a unique expression of art literally making use of what is available, without pretensions of any kind, yet providing something of interest to people taking a Sunday stroll.
We were impressed by the amount of art already arising "for the people, by the people" in the HafenCity and so wished to support it.
We are not politically motivated. We have no commercial intentions for the website. We are not a charity, nor are we sponsored by anyone.
We do not infer with the name "Volkskunst" any outdated wartime associations of the word "Volk" or of its use to describe 19th Century handicraft - we take Volkskunst to mean simply "art for the people, by the people". |
