subvision
www.subvision-hamburg.com
Hafencity Strandkai - 26 Aug 2008 until 06 Sep 2008
Subversive? Visionary? Substantial? Inconsequential?
The arts event "subvision" plans to present more than 50 artist's initiatives from all around the world in a temporary construction made up of hundreds of shipping containers at Strandkai. The event proposes the inclusion of video art, photography, paintings and performances. While it is applauded by some as "a special arts event going beyond established arts", it is also controversial. That the contempt for official arts sponsorship is reinforced when tax-payer's money is also devoted to a project in which art is simply used as a lever to promote the interests of Hamburg's private real estate investors.

Whether it's on or off ("auf" or "zu") it certainly promises some lively debate, already evident in the following blogs, alongside the recognised Hamburg, Hafencity and cultural media: www.thing-hamburg.de / subvision.wordpress.com / subvision.kulando.de / subvision.blogger.de / www.subvision-hamburg.com /

Gentle melodies in the giant building site
HafenCity Hamburg - 26 Apr 2007 until 01 Jul 2007
Two music events are planned to give some relief to the noise of bulldozers and pneumatic drills in the HafenCity. On the 26th and 27th April the "Ensemble Resonance" chamber orchestra play contemporary music with the somewhat confusing title of "On the water" - confusing because they won't play on a pontoon but in Kaispeicher B instead. For information, tickets and ticket prices see www.ensembleresonanz.com

On Saturday 30th June (13:00-21:00) and Sunday 1st July (11:00-19:00) "Water Music" is splashed about in the Cruise Center. Part of a series on concerts for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. For information about the programme and tickets see www.shmf.de

The plans introduced will commence implementation in the first half of 2007 although the final completion of the Overseas Quarter is not expected before 2011. Location: Cruise Center, Großer Grasbrook 19, Terminal 2. Opening times: daily from 14:00 to 19:00. Entry: free.

10° Art: Portals of the HafenCity
www.kulturbehoerde.hamburg.de
Vom Rathaus bis zur Hafencity - 15 Sep 2006 until 17 Dec 2006
65 artists applied with their concepts for the competition, launched by the Hamburg City Office of Culture, to decorate the portals into the HafenCity. Four arts projects were selected and setup. "Stop! Set course seawards" provides an informative route for cyclists from the Reesenbrücke bridge to the HafenCity. "River Walk" presents a two-part installation on the pedestrian bridge at Kibbelsteg. Large format photos of "closer to the sea" provide images of the harbour, river and sea into the city centre. "Landscapes at the growing edge" are 14 cars, filled with earth and bedecked with plants, parked between the Rathaus and Magellan Terrace in the HafenCity. Further information about the projects and their artists can be found on the Office of Culture's website (see above). There you can also download a PODcast providing an audio tour, which includes descriptions of the projects.

In case you're wondering why it is called 10°: Longitude 10°East cuts directly through Hamburg's city centre.

Biscuit tin photos

KuBaSta - Raum für Kunst, Bau und Stadtentwicklung | Repsoldstr. 45 | 20097 Hamburg - 15 Jul 2006 until 29 Jul 2006
The Hafencity photographed with empty biscuit tins: the camera obscura is not an antique kind of camera, instead has been a gadget to help in sketching since the time of Leonardo da Vinci. A working group from the Hamburg High School for Art and Design took this device and has sought locations and non-locations, movement and speed, the two and three dimensional, fast moving and standing, minimum and maximum covering, material structures, loops (photo: Seminar Kamera Obskura, HfbK).
Opening party: 14.07.06, 19:00 Uhr, Exhibition times: 15.07.-29.07.06, 16:00-22:00, daily from 21:00 films on the topic of the exhibition.

Flüchtige Orte - Impressions from the HafenCity
www.aplanat.de
aplanat Galerie für Fotografie | Lippmannstrasse 69-71 | 22769 Hamburg - 20 Jan 2006 until 08 Mar 2006
Photos taken by Bert Brüggemann in 2005 for the theatre project "Jahrmarkt des Abschieds" (the farewell carnival). Fascinated by the countless unexpected perspectives, photographer Bert Brüggemann documented the smooth transition between planning and completion in the HafenCity. He wants to open the spectators eyes to the dynamics of change, the beauty in the banal and the suspense of motion with his pictures. They show that in every moment the future launches forth from a new beginning.
